"Silent Alarms: The Urgent Need for Whistle-Blower Protections in AI"

Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at a rapid rate, which poses serious concerns, yet the rules of today have not caught up. Nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) were employed by a large AI company to keep outgoing employees from criticizing its policies and to avoid candid conversations about safety concerns. Many more employees came forward, exposing the company's dubious safety procedures and unfulfilled promises, after one employee refused to sign and went public.

Many employees would keep quiet out of fear, but some have spoken out despite the consequences to their careers. The AI business poses substantial risks that may not be illegal, making the current whistleblower laws, which primarily cover only illegal conduct, insufficient. More robust safeguards, such as those found in the public and financial sectors, are necessary to guarantee that AI workers can voice concerns without fear of reprisal.

In order for AI workers to disclose safety concerns without fear of retaliation, federal legislation are required. Important first steps include requiring corporations to notify employees of their rights and establishing an impartial authority to supervise whistleblower disclosures.

The current voluntary commitment-based approach to managing AI risks is insufficient since firms have proven to be unreliable. Whistleblower protections have been proposed in certain state laws, although it is unclear where these initiatives will end. Employees who could warn the public about AI hazards may keep quiet in the absence of strong safeguards, leaving society open to the potentially disastrous risks that AI poses.
